Landscaper in
Fairhaven, MA
We plan for drainage, grading, and soil conditions before any landscaping work begins - that's why properties across Fairhaven and the South Coast have trusted New England Tree & Landscape since the late 1980s.

What sets us apart is how we approach the work. We don't install landscapes and hope they hold up. We plan for drainage, grading, soil conditions, and long-term maintenance before any work begins. That means fewer problems, fewer callbacks, and landscapes that still look right years later, not just the week they're installed.

Below you'll find a breakdown of our landscaping services, when each makes sense, and how we tailor solutions to South Coast Massachusetts properties.
Our Landscaping Services

Our landscaping work breaks into two main areas.
Maintenance covers the regular services properties need: mulching, cleanups, trimming, etc.
Installation work includes new lawns, patios, walkways, planting beds, and drainage repairs.

We work on both residential and commercial properties. Some clients have older Fairhaven homes requiring ongoing maintenance and periodic upgrades. Others are new construction projects where we install lawns and complete initial landscaping. Commercial properties need reliable service that keeps sites accessible and professional looking.
Many landscaping companies specialize in one area: lawn care only, hardscaping only, or maintenance only.
We handle most of it under one roof. Lawns, patio construction, tree trimming, we take care of it. This saves you from coordinating multiple contractors for different needs.

Residential Landscaping Services
Residential landscaping focuses on improving how a property looks, functions, and holds up over time. Homeowners across the South Coast rely on landscaping to solve drainage issues, create usable outdoor spaces, and maintain clean, well-kept yards.

New England Tree & Landscape provides residential landscaping services throughout Fairhaven, New Bedford, Mattapoisett, Dartmouth, Acushnet, Marion, and Rochester. Many of the homes in this area deal with sandy coastal soil, clay-heavy inland soil, and drainage problems that require proper planning before any work begins.

Residential landscaping typically includes tree & shrub care, mulching, lawn installation, brush clearing, grading, loam spreading, seasonal cleanups, etc. Some homeowners need ongoing maintenance to keep existing landscapes maintained, while others hire us for installation projects such as new lawns, planting beds, or property upgrades.

Many residential clients combine landscaping with lawn care, so the entire property stays maintained throughout the year.

Every property is different. Some homes need drainage correction before landscaping can succeed, while others need planting upgrades or routine maintenance to keep the yard looking right. We evaluate the property, explain what work makes sense, and complete the job properly so the results hold up long-term.

When vegetation takes over a property, mowers and hand tools cannot get it back. We come in with chainsaws, pole saws, hedge trimmers, brush cutters, pruners, and whatever else the job calls for to cut back overgrown areas, remove invasive plants, clear undergrowth, and open up space that has been lost to years of unchecked growth.
Everything we cut gets hauled off the property, not piled up and left for you to figure out.

Every job is different. It might be clearing brush away from a fence line, removing invasives that have taken over, opening up wooded areas so they are walkable again, or fully clearing a site before grading and landscaping. We look at what you are dealing with, tell you what it takes to fix it, and get it done.

Commercial Landscaping Services

Commercial properties require consistent landscaping to stay safe, accessible, and professional-looking throughout the year. Office buildings, retail plazas, apartment complexes, medical offices, and industrial properties cannot afford neglected grounds or unreliable maintenance.

New England Tree & Landscape provides commercial landscaping services throughout the South Coast, including communities across Bristol County and Plymouth County such as Fairhaven, New Bedford, Dartmouth, Acushnet, Mattapoisett, Marion, and Rochester.

Commercial landscaping typically includes services like tree and shrub care, mulching, seasonal cleanups, planting bed maintenance, and landscape improvements. Larger sites may also require grading repairs, drainage corrections, planting bed installation, and snow removal during the winter months.

Routine turf maintenance, such as mowing, trimming, edging, and lawn treatments, falls under commercial lawn care services, which can be provided as part of a full property maintenance package.
Many commercial clients combine landscaping work and lawn care into one scheduled service plan so the entire property stays maintained throughout the season.

Reliability matters more than anything for commercial sites. Missed service visits create safety hazards, overgrown areas, and a poor impression for businesses that rely on consistent customer traffic. Our crews follow scheduled maintenance routes to keep properties maintained throughout the season.

We work with property managers, business owners, and facility managers who need dependable landscaping without constant oversight. Once service is scheduled, the work gets done on time, and the property stays maintained.

Yard Grading & Loam Spreading

Yard Grading & Loam Spreading: Fix the foundation issues that cause most landscaping to fail. Wrong grading creates water pooling against foundations. Poor soil means nothing grows properly. We address both problems.

Grading reshapes the ground, so water flows away from buildings and hardscaping. Most problems come from builders who skip proper grading or let excavators leave sites messy.

We regrade properties to fix drainage, create flat usable areas, and prepare sites for installation. Sometimes this requires bringing in fill to raise low areas. Other times, we cut down high spots. We use equipment to move soil and establish proper grade, then finish surfaces smoothly.

Loaming means bringing in quality topsoil after grading is complete. Good loam provides the nutrients plants and grass need to grow. Most local properties have poor soil: either clay that holds water and prevents root penetration, or sandy fill that won't hold nutrients. We bring in screened loam that actually supports plant growth.

Properties need 4 to 6 inches of quality loam for lawn areas. Planting beds require more. We spread it, grade it smooth, and prepare it for the next step: seed, sod, or planting.

Mulching
Mulch keeps planting beds clean and supports plant health. We apply mulch in spring after cleanups and refresh beds during summer when needed. Mulch retains soil moisture through hot weather, suppresses weed growth, and maintains stable soil temperature.

We primarily use bark mulch in natural or dyed brown finishes. Natural mulch gradually turns gray as it ages. Dyed mulch holds its darker color longer. Black or red mulch options work well for visual contrast. We supply whatever color clients prefer.

Proper mulching requires removing weeds first, edging beds cleanly, applying 2 to 3 inches of material, and keeping mulch away from tree trunks and plant stems.
Excessive mulch or material piled against stems causes rot. This common mistake happens frequently with inexperienced contractors or homeowners.

Beds require fresh mulch annually or twice a year (spring and fall) depending on material type and decomposition rate. We handle mulching for many properties during spring maintenance visits.
Grass Seeding
Grass seeding works when timing and conditions align properly. Optimal windows for seeding are early fall or late spring when soil temperatures support germination and rainfall remains consistent.
We prepare soil, distribute seed, and apply a thin layer of loam or straw cover to prevent washout and maintain moisture.

Seeding costs less than sod but requires longer establishment time. Grass begins emerging after several weeks, then needs additional weeks to fill in sufficiently for use.
Lawns remain off-limits during establishment, or foot traffic damages new growth.

We recommend seeding thin lawn areas, filling spots after drainage or construction work, or covering large areas when budget concerns outweigh speed requirements. For smaller projects or clients wanting immediate results, sod or hydroseeding becomes the better choice.

Sod Installation
Sod provides instant lawn coverage. We prepare soil identically to seeding: establish proper grade, bring in loam as needed, ensure adequate drainage, then lay sod in tight rows. Consistent watering for the first two weeks establishes the lawn.

We install sod when clients need quick results. Home sellers requiring finished yards before showings. Homeowners wanting summer backyard use instead of waiting for seed establishment. Properties with erosion issues needing immediate grass coverage. Sod addresses all these situations.

Cost runs higher than seeding because you're purchasing mature grass someone else cultivated for one to two years. Results arrive immediately and lawns become usable within weeks rather than months.

We source sod locally ensuring fresh delivery. Old sod sitting on pallets too long arrives partially dead and fails to establish properly.
Hydroseeding
Hydroseeding falls between traditional seeding and sod for both cost and speed. We spray a slurry containing seed, mulch, fertilizer, and water onto prepared soil. The mulch component retains moisture and prevents seed washout on slopes. Grass emerges faster than dry seeding while costing significantly less than sod.

Hydroseeding performs well on slopes where erosion threatens, and regular seeding washes away. It also suits large areas where sod costs become prohibitive but faster results than dry seeding matter.

Most hydroseeding projects involve new construction sites, roadside areas after utility work, or sloped properties requiring stabilization. Seed establishes more quickly than traditional methods because the mulch maintains consistent moisture and protection.

Spring and Fall Cleanups
Spring cleanups typically occur in April once sites dry sufficiently for work. We remove winter debris from beds, cut back dead perennials, and edge beds cleanly. Properties get prepared for the growing season.

Many Fairhaven properties accumulate uncleared fall leaves. Matted leaves kill grass and smother plants. We clear accumulated debris, rake thoroughly, and haul materials away.

Fall cleanups happen in November after leaf drop completes. We blow and rake all areas, clean beds, cut back perennials, and perform final mowing if grass continues growing. Properties get prepared for winter dormancy, so they avoid looking neglected and start spring cleanly.

Some clients schedule both spring and fall services. Others choose only fall cleanup for leaf management and skip spring when less work accumulates. Property needs and budget determine the schedule.
Tree and Shrub Care
Trees and shrubs are the most expensive plantings on your property, and replacing them costs ten times what maintaining them does.
We prune, shape, and treat trees and shrubs across Fairhaven, New Bedford, Mattapoisett, Dartmouth, and the South Coast to keep them healthy, looking right, and out of the way of houses, walkways, and power lines.
Pruning gets timed to each plant. Spring-flowering shrubs get pruned right after they bloom. Summer-flowering shrubs get pruned in early spring. Trees get pruned during dormancy unless dead or dangerous branches need immediate attention.
We also treat insect and disease problems before they kill plants that took years to grow.

Mosquito Control
If you are avoiding your own yard at dusk, mosquito control fixes that. We treat properties across Fairhaven, Mattapoisett, Marion, New Bedford, and Dartmouth every two weeks from April through September, targeting the areas where mosquitoes actually live: woodlines, shrubs, planting beds, under decks, and shaded areas along buildings. We do not spray open lawn because mosquitoes do not rest there.

Treatment kills adult mosquitoes on contact and creates a residual barrier on foliage that continues working for about two weeks. You will notice the difference the same evening. Properties near Buzzards Bay, the Acushnet River, Fort Phoenix, or wooded areas see the biggest improvement because those locations have the heaviest mosquito pressure.

Most clients sign up for a full season package of approximately 12 treatments to maintain control all summer.
Single treatments are also available for outdoor events like cookouts or parties. Treatment is safe for kids, pets, and plants once it dries, typically within a few hours.
Storm Debris Cleanup
Storm debris cleanup involves removing fallen trees, branches, and vegetation damage after hurricanes, nor'easters, and wind storms. We clear properties so they're accessible and safe again.
Heavy storms knock down trees, snap branches, and scatter debris across yards. We cut up fallen trees, remove damaged branches still hanging, and clear all material from properties. Everything gets hauled away, so properties are usable.
Emergency response happens after major storms when access routes need clearing immediately. We prioritize blocked driveways and entrances so people can get in and out. Then we handle the rest of the property.
We use chainsaws for cutting, equipment for moving large materials, and trucks for hauling. Properties throughout Fairhaven and the South Coast get hit hard by coastal storms. Quick cleanup prevents further damage and gets properties back to normal.

FAQ's
When is the ideal time of year to start a landscaping project?
Spring and fall are the best times for landscaping and hardscaping projects. These seasons provide ideal conditions for plant establishment and construction work. Spring allows plants to establish before summer heat, while fall gives root systems time to develop before winter dormancy

What’s the difference between hardscaping and soft scaping?
Hardscaping is the nonliving stuff like patios, walkways, walls, and steps that give the yard structure and function. Soft scaping is the living stuff like grass, plants, trees, and beds that fill it in and make it look finished.

What services are typically included in a full landscaping project?
A full landscaping project usually includes design, grading, drainage, hardscaping like patios and walkways, planting, and lawn installation. After that, ongoing maintenance covers pruning, mulching, cleanups, weed control, and keeping everything looking the way it should.

What sets New England Tree & Landscape apart from other landscapers?
