Landscape Designer in the Sconticut Neck Rd & West Island Area

Serving Plymouth and Bristol Counties

New England Tree & Landscape Inc

Commercial & Residential Properties

If you are putting money into your property, you need a landscape company that can handle the whole job the right way, from the design to the final result.

That is what we have done throughout Sconticut Neck and West Island for over 35 years. From major landscape transformations on waterfront properties near the southern tip of the Neck to new construction at Starboard Estates, property owners trust us because we do clean work and we do it right the first time.

We have designed and installed complete landscapes for Olympic gold medalist Jim Craig and many other homeowners who wanted one team to handle everything. They did not want to hire one company for design, another for grading, another for patios, and another for planting. They hired one proven crew that could do it all, because we are the ones doing the work.

That same trust goes beyond residential properties. We have also provided landscaping and weekly lawn care for Titleist / Acushnet Company for decades. That kind of long-term relationship only happens when the work stays consistent year after year.

Here is how it works: We design your outdoor space, then we build it. We handle excavation and grading, bring in quality loam, build patios and walkways, install stone walls, and put in the lawn through hydroseeding, seeding, or sod. We also choose and plant the right trees and shrubs for the salt air and sandy soil conditions on the Neck, and finish the job with fresh mulch so the property looks complete.

After the install, our lawn care and maintenance services keep your property looking good all season. Many of our design clients, including Jim Craig, still use us for weekly mowing and seasonal work years later because they trust our standards.

We also handle snow removal in the winter for residential properties on Sconticut Neck and West Island. Sconticut Neck Road is the only way in and out of the peninsula, and the West Island causeway can flood during storm tides.

We plow during storms to keep driveways and properties accessible, not hours after snowfall ends. The clients who trust us to build their properties trust us to protect them during New England winters, too.

From our Huttleston Avenue location in Fairhaven, we are about four miles from the start of Sconticut Neck Road. Whether you are near Pope Beach, down by Hoppy's Landing, on West Island, or anywhere along Sconticut Neck Road, you get the same level of care and the same quality work that has earned us a strong reputation for over 35 years.

One local team. Proven track record. Complete landscape design and installation, standalone landscaping services, lawn care, and snow removal from start to finish.

ABOUT OUR SERVICES

Real landscape design is not just picking plants and spreading mulch. It is engineering. When we design a property on Sconticut Neck or West Island, we start by evaluating the site conditions: slope, sandy soil composition, drainage patterns, sun exposure, wind exposure, and proximity to salt water. Drainage is addressed first because poor water management undermines everything else.

Our landscape design plans account for your goals, your budget, and how the finished property should function and look. For new construction, we create complete designs from the ground up. Many lots on the Neck are cleared down to sand and fill with no topsoil, no grading, and no drainage infrastructure. For existing properties, we design around what is already in place. Every plan serves as a clear blueprint covering grading, drainage, hardscaping, irrigation, plant placement, and lawn installation.

Plant selection and installation are based on real site conditions. Salt spray, sandy soil, wind exposure, water access, and maintenance expectations all determine what is planted and where. We install plant material that survives the coastal conditions on Sconticut Neck instead of failing after one season. Bayberry, beach plum, eastern red cedar, rugosa rose, switchgrass, and bearberry are examples of species that handle the exposure out here. A property on the west side of the Neck facing New Bedford Harbor gets different conditions than a lot on the east side facing Nasketucket Bay, and plant choices reflect that.

Erosion control and drainage planning is where many projects fail. The sandy soil on Sconticut Neck moves fast in some areas and pools in others, especially on low-lying sections near Goulart Memorial Drive and along the West Island causeway. When slopes are not designed correctly, homeowners experience washouts after the first heavy rain. This is common on coastal properties throughout the Neck, where three sides face Buzzards Bay. We design grades properly, install drainage systems where needed, and direct water away from structures so it goes where it should.

Landscape lighting extends usability and improves safety. We install low-voltage LED systems to illuminate walkways, steps, and outdoor living areas without excessive energy use.

Properties within 100 feet of wetlands, coastal banks, salt marshes, or dunes on Sconticut Neck will likely need approval from the Fairhaven Conservation Commission before any landscape work begins. We are familiar with this process and can help you understand what is required before we start.

Once the design is finalized, we handle the full installation and construction process that turns plans into a finished landscape. This is the physical work that reshapes properties and makes them usable long-term. We also provide ongoing landscape maintenance to keep properties functional and maintained year after year.

Brush clearing and site preparation come first. Overgrown brush, invasive vegetation, and unwanted growth are cleared and removed to open up the site. All debris is hauled away so the property is clean and ready for construction.

Grading and loaming establish the foundation for everything that follows. The sandy, low-nutrient soil on Sconticut Neck does not support healthy turf or plant growth without proper preparation. We bring in quality loam, grade the property to match the design, and address drainage before permanent features are installed. New construction sites on the Neck almost always require significant grading because land is rarely left ready for landscaping.

Hardscaping follows once grades are set. Patios, walkways, retaining walls, and granite steps are built with proper base preparation, so they remain stable through freeze-thaw cycles. We install pavers, natural stone, and granite based on site conditions, use, and budget. Materials are selected for durability in salt air conditions rather than products that deteriorate after a few seasons.

Mulching is completed after planting. Fresh mulch protects roots, regulates moisture, suppresses weeds, and gives beds a finished appearance. Old mulch is removed when necessary, beds are edged properly, and new mulch is installed at the correct depth.

Lawn installation comes near the end of the project. Once irrigation, planting, and bed work are complete, grass is installed around everything else. Properties may be finished with traditional seeding, hydroseeding, or sod installation, depending on timeline, budget, and site conditions. Hydroseeding is common on the Neck because it establishes well on sandy soils when combined with proper loam preparation.

Ongoing landscaping maintenance keeps properties functional long-term. This includes spring and fall cleanups, storm debris removal, bed edging, pruning, mulch refreshes, tree and shrub care, and mosquito control along property perimeters and wooded edges.

Lawns on Sconticut Neck and West Island require consistent care or they deteriorate quickly. Salt spray dries out grass, sandy soil drains nutrients faster than loamy ground, and wind desiccation is a real issue on exposed sections near the water. We provide lawn care services for residential properties throughout the Neck.

Lawn mowing and maintenance includes mowing, edging, trimming, and clearing hard surfaces. Grass is cut at proper heights to promote healthy growth. Cutting too short stresses turf, and on the Neck that stress compounds with the salt and wind exposure. Reliable service means showing up on schedule, not when it is convenient.

Lawn fertilization and pH adjustment support thick, healthy turf. Nutrients are applied at the right times and adjusted for the sandy soil conditions on Sconticut Neck. Lime is used when necessary to correct the acidic pH common in coastal soils that prevents grass from absorbing fertilizer properly.

Lawn aeration and overseeding relieve soil compaction and improve turf density. Core aeration increases air, water, and nutrient movement. Overseeding fills thin areas that develop from salt and wind stress, while slice seeding and dethatching are used when compaction or thatch buildup is severe.

Lawn weed control prevents and eliminates weeds throughout the season. Pre-emergent treatments stop weeds before they germinate. Post-emergent treatments control existing weeds using targeted applications instead of blanket spraying.

Lawn pest control addresses grubs, chinch bugs, and other turf-damaging insects. Goose deterrent applications are used to keep geese off lawns before turf is destroyed. Preventative treatments protect lawns from damage that would otherwise require full replacement.

Lawn disease treatment addresses issues such as brown patch, dollar spot, and snow mold. These are common on the Neck during humid summer months. Turf diseases are diagnosed early and treated with targeted fungicides to stop spread and restore lawn health before major damage occurs.

Properties on Sconticut Neck and West Island need dependable snow removal during winter storms. We plow during storms to keep driveways accessible and reduce hazardous conditions, not hours after snowfall ends.

Snow removal on the Neck comes with challenges that most Fairhaven neighborhoods do not have. Sconticut Neck Road is the only way in and out of the peninsula, and the West Island causeway can become impassable during storms with high tides and wave action. We stage equipment and plan routes based on storm timing and tide schedules so properties are cleared promptly.

Snow plowing clears driveways and access areas. Driveways on the Neck tend to be longer than average Fairhaven properties, and many are on slopes that become hazardous without prompt clearing. Snow shoveling and snow blowing maintain walkways, stairs, and entrances to keep properties safe and usable.

De-icing and salting reduce ice buildup on driveways, walkways, and entrances. Ice control materials improve traction, prevent refreezing, and reduce liability. A plowed driveway with ice is still a safety risk. De-icing completes the job.

FAQ's

Do I need a permit to landscape near the coast on Sconticut Neck?

Sometimes. If your property is within 100 feet of wetlands, a coastal bank, salt marsh, or dunes, the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act and Fairhaven’s local wetlands bylaw may require approval through the Fairhaven Conservation Commission. Many properties on Sconticut Neck and West Island fall inside these zones. We can help you figure out whether your project needs a filing before we start.

What plants survive best in the salt air on Sconticut Neck?

Salt-tolerant and native species perform best. Options that do well in coastal exposure include bayberry, beach plum, eastern red cedar, switchgrass, little bluestem, rugosa rose, bearberry, and arrowwood viburnum. We select plants based on your property’s sun, wind direction, and how close you are to direct salt spray.

Can you handle snow removal on West Island even when the causeway floods?

Yes. We plan routes and staging based on storm timing and tide schedules. Since the West Island causeway can become impassable during high tides and storm surge, we position equipment to serve West Island properties before conditions worsen. We’ve plowed Sconticut Neck and West Island for decades and understand the timing coastal access requires.

Do you serve Sconticut Neck year-round?

Yes. We provide landscaping, lawn care, seasonal cleanups, and snow removal for Sconticut Neck and West Island properties year-round.
